Vibrance & Saturation Masks
The vibrance and saturation mask tools creates masks based on areas of low saturation or vibrance and areas of high saturation in your images.
Using the “Vib” or Vibrance button creates a Vibrance adjustment layer and creates a mask on that layer that targets the areas of your images with low vibrance. This tools uses the HSB/HSL filter that is built into Photoshop to assist in the creation of this mask. With this mask applied you can increase the vibrance knowing that it’s not targeting already saturated areas in the image. This doesn’t always mean though that you want all of those areas to have vibrance increased. So you would use this tool in conjunction with masked groups to ensure it’s only targeting the area you are interested in.
The “Sat” or Saturation button created a Hue & Saturation adjustment layer and creates a mask on that layer that targets the areas of your images with high saturation, but necessarily over saturation. You can then adjust the saturation in the image, knowing that it’s not reducing saturation in areas that are not highly saturated. Again, this doesn’t always mean that you want all of those areas to reduce in saturation. Use it conjunction with masked groups to ensure that you are only targeting the areas you are interested in.
The video below will show how to use the Vibrance and Saturation Masks in more detail.
