Tour Information

Dates: 10th – 19th of January 2019
Duration: 9 nights
Particpants: 4 maximum
Fitness Level: Moderate (No Rigorous Hiking Required)
Skill Level: This tour is open to photographers of all skill levels.

Our photography tours are much more then just showing you some of the most beautiful places. We are focussed on helping you get the most from your photography. We can and will work with you on any aspect of your photography that you’d like to improve. Also during our downtime we’ll do some editing sessions, if you’re interested is in post-processing.

Open for Bookings

Our winter tours are very small groups of 4 photographers only. This gives us a great amount of flexibility and ensures that you won’t be competing with others for your perfect composition. We’ll be staying in 3 to 4-star accommodation (no hostels) in Banff and Jasper, so you’ll be in comfort in your downtime, allowing you to recharge fully for each day. With only 8 to 9 hours of daylight at this time of year, we’ll spend full days chasing the light. Photography is magical at all times of day in the winter, with day photography allowing us to create impactiful monochrome images. Throughout the tour we’ll also be keeping our eyes out for Aurora alerts, and we’ll head out at a moments notice to capture the dancing lights.

We’ll provide you with snow shoes for the duration of the tour and cramp-ons / ice-cleats for our ice walks. You will be responsible for your own winter clothing, but don’t worry if you don’t have adequate winter clothing, you can hire jackets, pants and boots in Banff if required. Although the tours do not have any rigorous hiking, we will be snow shoeing in soft snow, which requires a little effort. In soft snow you will tire more easily, but we will be taking our time, and our short treks would be manageable by anyone with average fitness.

Below are the locations we plan to visit during the tour.

Note: Depending on weather, time or closures not all sites may be visited or accessible, in these circumstances we’ll seek alternatives. We will be chasing the light and best conditions during the tour. These locations are a guide only, and we’ll endeavour to see them all, but light will rule the days.

Day 2 – 5: Banff (4 nights)

We’ll transfer from Calgary to Banff where we will stay in the heart of downtown Banff giving us easy access to all the amenities this picturesque town has to offer on our downtime. We’ll use Banff as our home base for our excursions through Canmore, Banff, Yoho National Park and the Southern end of the Icefield Parkway.

We’ll spend 4 nights in Banff shooting the wonderful landscapes on offer at the Southern end of the Rocky Mountains. From the thermal breaks in the ice at Vermillion Lakes, the Three Sisters towering over Canmore, to the incredible breaks in the ice along the Bow River. Traversing further North we’ll explore Emerald Lake in Yoho National park and the stunning Bow and Peyto lakes on the Icefield Parkway. We’ll also head to Abraham Lake to chase the famous ice bubbles frozen into the lake. There are many other amazing scenes we’ll be shooting as well as we spend full days chasing the light.

Day 6 – 8: Jasper (3 nights)

We’ll transfer from Banff to the quaint mountain town of Jasper at the Northern end of the Rockies, driving up the Icefield Parkway. Jasper will be our home base for the next 3 nights.

The Rocky Mountains scenery surrounding Jasper is beautiful at all times of year, but is transofrmed into an incredible photography location in winter. Over the next 3 days we’ll be taking ice walks in the evening and morning at Maligne Canyon, to photograph the frozen waterfalls. We’ll chase the light along the road to Maligne and Medicine Lake, and if we’re lucky we’ll spot moose along the way. The Northern end of the Icefield Parkway is a stunning area of the Rockies with frozen waterfalls at Athabasca and Sunwapta, and incredible breaks in the ice on the Athabasca River. We’ll also visit the Columbia Icefields, an amazing baren land with glaciers, a surreal and picturesque landscape.
