Advanced Photoshop Workshop
Instructor: Aaron Dowling
Join Aaron Dowling the 2016 WA AIPP Professional Photographer of the Year, 2016 WA AIPP Professional Landscape & Travel Photographer of the Year unlocking the secrets to editing in Photoshop. With photography there are two steps that we take to create our images and both are equally important. To realise our vision we first need to take the image, and for an image to stand out amongst the crowd, we are looking for visual impact in what we shoot, which is a massive part in the creative process.
The creative process does not end in camera, we then need to finish our images off. There are many tools that we can use to do this, with Photoshop being only one, but probably the most powerful. Whether you are looking to do minor enhancements or work on your next masterpiece, using Photoshop is an extension of the creative process and another tool in our arsenal.

I have been using Photoshop since the early 2000’s, initially to edit scanned film images. I have been experimenting with the possibilities of this powerful editing program ever since. I now develop Photoshop plugins and run Photoshop workshops to share my knowledge and experience with others. I’m not a believer in keeping secrets when it comes to photography or editing and happily share my knowledge with others.
How often have you stared at an image and didn’t know where to begin, or have been frustrated that you can’t get the image looking like you have envisaged?
This can be a common issue when editing images. This workshop will help you to visualise the final image before you begin editing, then give you the tools to get the most out of your images. We’ll use powerful editing tools that allow us to target specific areas of our images with complete accuracy, unlocking our vision and giving us complete control. We’ll remove the creative stumbling blocks and delve deep into the possibilities of our images, but most importantly we’ll be able to reach our goals.
Luminosity Masks are a powerful masking technique in Photoshop that allow you to make extremely refined selections of tonal ranges in your images. The added benefit of using luminosity masks is the smooth transition between selected areas, making adjustments and digital blending seamless without the harsh lines created by either painting layer masks or using one of the selection tools in Photoshop.
Although luminosity masks have been predominantly used and perfected by landscape photographers, they can be used with any type of image from portraits right through to multiple image blends for the high dynamic range of many landscapes.
In this workshop we will work through most of the key uses for luminosity masks and many other tools, working with real world examples, provided as part of the workshop. Using several example images, and images supplied from attendees we’ll do complete edits on these photos, first talking through what we want to achieve (our vision) and then using the techniques outlined below and more to achieve our desired result.
Key topics and techniques covered:
- Layer masking with adjustment layers
- Blending multiple images
- Selecting and using luminosity masks
- Using luminosity masks with adjustment layers & blending modes
- Using luminosity masks to digitally blend images
- Refining luminosity masks to better isolate areas of an image
- Painting with luminosity masks
- Masking the masks for finer targeted adjustments and more
- Use luminosity masks to control colour in tonal ranges
- Using Color Range like a luminosity mask, but based on colour in the image
- Colour Adjustment tools to Dodge & Burn and direct the viewers eye
- Transformation tools to change perspective and points of interest / distraction
Pre-requisite Skills and Knowledge
To get the most out of this workshop, you will need to have the following skills and understandings:
- Confidence and familiarity with your computer, including downloading your Raw files to your hard drive and navigating to those files.
- An understanding of the key tools in Photoshop eg. Selection Tool, Brush Tool, Gradient Tool and so on.
- A solid understanding of Layers and Layer Masks in Photoshop – what they do an how you use them.
Although we will take a few minutes to discuss layer masks and how they work, this workshop assumes that you have a strong foundation in layer masking and the concept of using black and white (and everything in between) with adjustment layers and as masks on image layers.
What You Will Need
- Although not a requirement, this is a hands on workshop, so bringing a laptop with Photoshop CS6 or later will be beneficial.
- Pen and paper to take notes during the workshop.
Tea and coffee and a light lunch are included in the workshop. We will take a 30 minute break for lunch and a couple other short breaks during the workshop.
