Aaron Dowling is a Professional, multi-award winning Landscape & Travel Photographer based in the Canadian Rockies in Canmore, Alberta.
“Photography is a journey of exploration & creativity that has no limits”
Aaron is an Accredited Associate of Photography with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP). The AIPP offers professional accreditation and ensures its members maintain a high standard of professionalism in their services in the photographic industry.
For Aaron, photography is more about personal expression and exploration then it is about taking a beautiful image. Being in the field with a camera in his hand, is a bit like fishing in the remote rivers and lakes of Canada, it doesn’t matter if you catch (capture) anything, it’s about the journey. Often just standing or walking through a location and enjoying the surrounds is just as, or more rewarding then taking a great shot. By taking this approach Aaron is able to see beyond the landscape and instead feel it, helping to create unique and striking images.
Aaron has been taking photos as long as he can remember, as most people have, it was back in the mid 2000’s when he decided to start thinking more about what he was capturing. Firstly, with a passion for landscape photography, he delved deep into the art of landscape photography, then combining his passion for landscapes and travel he has branched out into both genres. Being an Engineer and Project Manager in a previous life the technical side of photography came easily, allowing the creative side of photography to be his prominent focus.
In the early 2000’s Aaron started using Photoshop, more because he was intrigued by the apparent complexity of the program then anything else. There was very little support or tutorials in those days, therefore much of what he learnt was self taught through trial and error. Once he made the switch to Digital Photography everything he had learnt could now easily be applied to his imagery. With a strong technical understanding of Photoshop, he has used these skills to create Photoshop Plugins, particularly related to a technique called Luminosity Masks, another of his passions. He believes that Photoshop is another tool that allows us to create our artistic vision.
Combining his passion for photography, travel and teaching, Aaron has created photographic services that include Photography Tours, Workshops, Digital Products and Video Tutorials. He focusses on his strengths in these areas to offer his clients value for money in everything he offers.
Although Aaron strongly believes that photography is a personal journey of exploration and creativity, he also believes that competition provides an additional platform to push our creativity and skills. Over the past few years Aaron has entered and has been extremely successful in high profile photography competitions, recently being awarded the prestigious title of 2016 & 2017 West Australian AIPP Professional Photographer of the Year, 2016 & 2017 West Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year and 2016 West Australian Travel Photographer of the Year, and was also a finalist (top 3 of 340 portfolios) in the Australian Professional Photography Awards in the Landscape category in 2016.
